Transformation of the Format of Talempong Performances in Padang. Case Study: Syofyan Dance and Music Art Studio
Abstract
This study aims to determine: (1) the forms of transformation of musical elements in the performance of creative Talempong at Sanggar Syofyani, and (2) the impact of these transformations on the aesthetic, social, and cultural values of the Minangkabau people. This study employs a qualitative method with an ethnomusicological approach to analyze the transformation of Talempong performances from traditional to creative forms. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that the transformation of traditional Talempong into creative Talempong is achieved through musical exploration that blends traditional and modern elements without compromising its original character and function as an accompaniment to performing arts. This transformation includes the addition of Western instruments, such as keyboards and drums; changes to the musical structure so that Talempong plays a role in melody, rhythm, and harmony; and the development of performances through dance and theater. Creative Talempong enriches aesthetic value through the fusion of instruments and traditional poetry, increases interest among the younger generation and broadens public appreciation, and demonstrates a balance between the preservation of Minangkabau cultural values and innovation.
